Hatcher plan:
9 lifts, hotel, golf
If Fred Rogers' dream plan comes true, Alaskans skiers will be making their way down the slopes of Hatcher Pass and getting a luxury ride back up in the comfort of a gondola.
Rogers, head of Hatcher Pass Development Co., wants to build a total of eight chairlifts, a gondola, plus a hotel, golf course and other attractions over three stages of construction along the slopes of Government Peak and Bald Mountain Ridge.
"I am taking it one day at a time and we are doing the best we know how to do," Rogers said. "We are 100 percent optimistic and very positive that it is going to be a big go."
New redistricting plan leaves Mat-Su grumbling
The state reapportionment board gave Mat-Su politicians exactly what they didn't want this week -- a borough with four House districts and a healthy swallow of Anchorage residents.
The new plan pushes Lazy Mountain, Sutton and Chickaloon into a district with Valdez, Cordova and Delta Junction, while another district mixes more than 4,000 Anchorage residents with Wasilla voters.
In the sports section of the Frontiersman, the athlete of the week was a skier named Tommy Moe, who went on to win an Olympic gold medal.
In the classified section, a two-bedroom home on an acre was going for around $89,000. A 2.19-acre parcel in the Butte was listed at $12,000.
At Tony Chevrolet, a new Suburban was listed at $22,999, while a new Cavalier was going for $8,999.
The Iditarod was getting ready to start, and the odds-on favorite was a Big Lake musher named Martin Buser -- who last year set a new record for the fastest race.
