On this day in 1913, the zipper was patented by Gideon Sundbach of Hoboken, N.J.

On this day in 1985, the Challenger was launched at Kennedy Space Center. On board were a crew of seven astronauts and a bevy of animals that included monkeys and rats. The craft landed back on Earth on May 6, 1985.

On this day in 1992, riots broke out in Los Angeles in response to the non-guilty verdict awarded to four Los Angeles police officers who were caught on film beating Rodney King.
