Subsistence panel named

Gov. Bill Sheffield has appointed a five-member task force, headed by former Fairbanks Sen. John Butrovich, to review state and federal laws governing subsistence hunting and fishing in Alaska.

The task force will examine the subsistence laws and regulations implementing them, as requested by the Boards of Fisheries and Game during their annual spring meetings.

"When the task force begins meeting in early July, I hope we can have a serious and substantial discussion of the laws without the kind of inflammatory rhetoric that surrounded the issue during the campaigns last fall," Sheffield said.

Valley Scouts get Eagle awards

They received the highest honor possible in Scouting -- the Eagle Scout. Sterling Grover, Shane Lamb and Dan Pontius last week were presented with the hard-earned title at an Eagle Court of Honor last week.

New school to go on leased land

The new Wasilla area elementary school which voters approved may finally have found a home. The borough assembly approved a resolution for a lease with the University of Alaska concerning property where anew school will be built west of Wasilla. Another site on private land was knocked out of contention when the owner refused to sell.

ABC Travel Time was advertising a $615 package to Disneyland, which included air fare, lodging and attractions.

At Palmer Video Cache, a ColecoVision video game package was $219, which included the Donkey Kong cartridge. Other games, like Venture and Zaxxon, ranged in price from $40 to $70. You could play those games on a Zenith 19-inch color television with "electronic tuning, stylish cabinet -- complete with stand," which retailed for $389.
