Max Clements takes city council seat

City policing and provisions for streets in city subdivisions were considered at the March 10 meeting of the Palmer City Council.

A newly appointed councilman, Max Clements, was also sworn in. City Manager Larry Fountaine described the contract proposal from the Alaska State Police for a 15-month period, which would provide for quarterly payments for police services to be provided to the city.

The Frontiersman will call for bids on construction the latter part of March for a new building which will house the new Palmer Post Office and office space for the Frontiersman.

With the additional space, it will no longer be necessary for two families to share the same post office box. Some additional larger boxes for businesses will be available, and will generally be on a first-come, first-served basis, although volume of mail will be considered.

At the B&B Super Market, you could buy three pounds of ground beef for $1.49 or three pounds of beef cube steak for $1. A two-pound package of cheese was 69 cents, and you could purchase four packages of cake mix for a buck. A 44-pound box of apples ran $7.39.

At the Center Theater in Palmer, John Wayne starred in "Donovan's Reef," while Doris Day and Jimmy Durante were co-starring in "Jumbo." Jane Mansfield was in "The George Raft Story."

One advertisement warned readers not to "let an automobile accident put a dent in your budget." The company was Pippel Insurance Agency, which is still around today.
