Borough asks for near double mill levy

The proposed 1974-75 budget for the Matanuska-Susitna Borough introduced last night, calls for a mill levy nearly double the present one.

The record total asked is $9.925 million, with about one-third of that, $3.152 million, to come from a local personal and real property tax levy of 16.2 mills. This year's levy was 8.8 mills.

Top local Iditarod racer seventh

All but one of the local competitors in the Iditarod Trail Race are now in Nome, with area mushers taking seventh through 11th places in the finish lineup.

First to come in among our mushers was Raymie Redington of Knik, earning $821 for his 1,000-mile effort. In eighth place was Ron Aldrich of Montana Creek, followed by Joee Redington Jr., Dick Mackey and then Joe Redington Sr., who won $465.

At the Center Theater in Palmer, Elliot Gould starred in "The Long Goodbye," while Burt Lancaster was in "Scorpio."

At Fisher's Y Grocery in Big Lake, a 50-pound bag of flour was going for $10.29 and a 10-pound bag of Alaskan Nugget potatoes costs $1.09.

Koslosky's Store was having a good sale. Four pounds of oranges cost a dollar, while Red Delicious apples were 29 cents a pound.

At Hartley Motors, you could pick up a used 1973 Dodge 3/4 ton pickup for $3,850 and a used 1972 Ford 1/2 ton pickup for $2,495.
