Four Corners wants fire protection
The Mat-Su Borough Assembly last week discussed what to do about fire service in "no man's land," the territory between Wasilla and Palmer in the Four Corners area.
Greater Palmer Area Fire Chief Dan Contini recommended the development of a new fire service area. Wasilla Fire Chief Jake Wright said that before any fire service area could be formed, the people living in the area must show more than a willingness to pay for the protective services, and must be able to man a station with volunteers.
New Wasilla hotel planned
Two Anchorage firms announced future plans for the construction of a new 20-room, $2.5 million hotel in Wasilla.
Tri Ventures of Alaska Inc., and J.D.'s Electric, plan to erect the new facility on a 4 1/2 acre site a mile south of Wasilla on the Parks Highway.
At D&A Super Store, they were having a 98 cent meant blowout. You could pick up spare ribs for 98 cents a pound, the same price as a pound of hamburger, chuck roast or chicken breasts.
A pint of cottage cheese was 69 cents, and a quart of egg nog was 89 cents.
In Palmer, at Koslosky's, a 10-pound bag of potatoes was $1.19 and an eight-pound box of Japanese mandarin oranges was $4.99.
In the classified section, you could buy a duplex with cathedral ceilings for $84,000.
In real estate, you could buy an 80-acre lot on a bluff, with a view of the inlet and mountains in the Fairview Loop area for $250,000.
A big contest was being prepared for the Valley's first baby of 1978. The winning baby received cash and gift certificates from several Valley businesses, including $5 from the Frontiersman.
