Permanent fund

heads list

The Alaska State Chamber of Commerce has adopted a 9-part program during a two-day meeting that just concluded. Heading the list of goals following a presentation by Juneau legislator Jim Duncan was a program to make the permanent fund a sustaining and stimulating part of the Alaska economy, but not to compete with private enterprise.

Swimming pool review asked

A swimming pool cost analysis resolution will be introduced at next Tuesday's borough meeting by assemblyman Jim Ekstedt.

Ekstedt said he is concerned about the excessive costs of building a boroughwide swimming pool in an area that doesn't have a water and sewer system.

In October, residents approved by a vote of 1,572 to 921 a $2.01 million bond for the construction of a boroughwide community swimming pool. The pool is to be built at Wasilla High School.

For Christmas dinner, you could pick up turkeys for 89 cents a pound or boneless hams for $1.99 a pound at Koslosky's. A 20-pound bag of potato was $1.59, while ripe tomatoes were 69 cents a pound.

Spenard Builders Supply was having a big sale on microwave ovens -- the cheapest units were $377, while more expensive models were $479.

The first Miss Merry Christmas was none other than Shelly Weiland of Palmer. Weiland appeared in the Dec. 13, 1978 edition no less than 34 times, mostly in pictures of businesses.

From skis to candy to boots, Weiland was the official face of Christmas for 1978.
