State proposes contract police work with city

Capt. Ernest Mayfield, head of the Southwestern district of the Alaska state department of police, presented a proposition to the Palmer city council under which the city of Palmer would contract from the state department of police for police work in the city of Palmer.

Mayfield's proposed contract would provide for a minimum of 100 hours a week of patrol service in the city of Palmer. Mayfield said there are now three troopers in the area, one living in Palmer, one in Wasilla, and one at the Butte. Two troopers would be added, both of whom would live in Palmer and be on call 24 hours a day.

The cost of this service to Palmer would be $27,715 per year, Mayfield said. The present $125 a month charge for emergency night calls would be absorbed in this figure, he added. The 1963 Palmer police department budget amounted to $35,335.
