Evan Jones receives huge coal contract
A contract for 230,000 tons of coal has been issued the Evan Jones Coal Company by the Navy Department, it was announced this week.
Under the contract, 150,000 tons of coal will go to Elmendorf Air Force Base and 80,000 will go to Fort Richardson.
Kings Lake Camp open
King's Lake Camp is getting a new look. Four new unit lodges, 16 feet by 24 feet in size, are being built by local and volunteer labor. Underbrush is being cleared out and sleeping cabins regrouped. The unit lodges will be used as small meeting places or recreation centers.
Wasilla woman to appear on Hollywood TV show
Mrs. Clinton Adcock of Wasilla left Sunday evening for a very exciting trip to Hollywood where she will appear on the television program "This is Your Life" which will feature the life of Mike Fredder of Iowa, a former neighbor of Mrs. Adcock.
Mrs. Adcock received word on June 2 of a long-distance telephone call from Hollywood. Not having a telephone, Mrs. Adcock decided to wait until morning to contact the operator. However, while attending an Auxiliary meeting that evening, she told of her call and several friends offered the use of their phones. In minutes, she was talking direct to Hollywood and a voice asked if she would be able to attend "This is Your Life."
At the Co-Op Trading Post, you could get a half-gallon of Matanuska Maid ice cream for 98 cents, a pound of bologna for 59 cents and a quart of Kraft mayonnaise for 89 cents.
In the television listings, popular shows included the Mickey Mouse Club and Ed Sullivan's shows.
For $3,400 you could buy a one-bedroom home. In downtown Palmer, it took $2,500 to buy a lot to build on. A complete service station, with a one-bedroom modern home included, could be purchased for $17,000.
