School funds

remain tight

The borough's school district and all other organized districts statewide will start out next year with the same amount of funding as they had this year, plus a little more to help with new enrollment.

Mat-Su Borough Schools will get $3,500 per student under the allocation. District officials figure this will still leave a funding shortage of about $300 per student when enrollment increases.

Talkeetna group halts chemical use

Last summer, Alaska Survival, a group of Talkeetna residents, won a court order banning the Alaska Railroad from spraying certain chemicals for foliage control. This week, the same judge granted the group a restraining order against spraying again -- this time eon the day the railroad was to begin chemical applications.

Wasilla council approves $2.8 million budget

The Wasilla city council passed its $2.8 million budget Monday with a minimum of public fanfare or comment. The 14-page document drew little attention since this second-class city has no local tax base and relies heavily on the borough, state and federal funding for operating revenue.

Mahay's Riverboat Service was advertising $40 dropoffs for king salmon, rainbow and dolly varden fishing. Mat-Su Supply was offering a $100 off sale on Homelite chainsaws, but the price was still $380. Travel fares were high as well -- roundtrip tickets to Seattle were $406, while it cost $692 to go roundtrip to Washington, D.C.

The Wasilla Water Festival was in full gear, with Huppies Roadhouse, Hallea Lodge and Boss Office Supply as some of the sponsors, along with still-established businesses such as ABC Travel Time, Wasilla Bar and Mat-Su Resort.
