MEA, IBEW

talks begin

It may be a dark winter for Matanuska Electric Association customers who have major power problems after Jan. 1, unless a new contract with electrical workers can be signed.

The existing contract between MEA and Local Union No. 1547 expires Dec. 31. Both MEA and IBEW have begun negotiations on a new contract. Last year, MEA and IBEW reached a contract agreement following a 52-day strike by electrical workers.

IBEW is looking for a 20-percent pay increase; an increase in vacation time from 30 to 35 days; 12 days a year sick leave; two additional holidays from 11 to 13; an increase in meal allowances from $7.50 to $15; a $104 clothing allowance per lineman; an increase in crew size; increased contributions to the pension plan; an increase in the medical plan; and an addition of a new union contract position in the warehouse.

Eero Volkswagen was advertising the perfect vehicle for the snow -- the Rabbit. "Come in and test drive a Rabbit. It's one car you'll appreciate most when the weather is at its worst."

In the television listings, shows like Little House on the Prairie, Happy Days, Alice, All in the Family and Hawaii 5-0 were popular. 60 Minutes was a ratings winner as well, much like today.

Land was still relatively expensive for the time. A one-acre lot in Cottonwood Shores subdivision was listed at $10,000. A three-acre parcel of land with a two-bedroom cabin on Montana Creek was listed at $57,000.
