Alaska dairies fined

Three Alaska dairies were fined over $100,000 Friday in Anchorage by a U.S. District Court judge after being found guilty of price fixing and rigging bids on the sale of dairy products in Southcentral Alaska.

U.S. District Court Judge James von der Heydt levied the fines after the three dairies, Arden Mayfair Inc., Matanuska Maid Inc. and Meadowmoore Alaska dairy Inc., entered pleas of nolo contendre in August.

An agreement or understanding existed between the three companies to fix prices on dairy products, an indictment said.

School bonds okayed

Borough voters want both a swimming pool and new schools, they clearly said in yesterday's voting.

Final unofficial tallies showed the $20 million bonds passing by a 64 percent margin, while the WHS swimming pool passed nearly as decisively.

MTA reading meters

Matanuska Electric Association announced that effective Oct. 1, MEA employees will start reading customer meters. Currently, MEA relies on customer's self-reading their meters.

In the television listings, Charlie's Angels, The Donny and Marie Osmond Show and The Love Boat were ratings winners. At the Airport 1 Theater in Wasilla, Kris Kristofferson and Ali MacGraw were starring in "Convoy" while David Carridine starred in the "Cannon Ball."

At Koslosky's, you could buy round steak for $2.19 a pound and London broil for $3.49 a pound. Tomatoes were 59 cents a pound and a 10-pound bag of potatoes was $1.19.

In the classified section, a three-bedroom Palmer home, with an attached garage, was $63,500. Forty acres in Willow was listed for $111,000 and two lots in Big Lake were listed for $9,800.
