Voters to accept,

reject big borough

Unless attorneys are successful in a last-ditch try for a hearing on the Matanuska-Susitna petitioner's appeal, voters of District 7 and District 8 will to the polls to accept or reject the proposed Captain Cook Borough.

Matanuska-Susitna proponents argue that the large borough setup will deprive them of an opportunity for local government and will give them insufficient representation on the borough assembly.

Telephone

cutovers begin

At 10 p.m. on Sept. 23, the new telephone exchange at Palmer will go into service. All Palmer exchange subscribers will begin to use their new phone numbers on Sept. 24.

There will be no change in dialing Wasilla or Sutton, the MTA manager said. The letter previous will be dropped an all numbers will be used -- Wasilla will be 376 instead of FR6 and Sutton will be 258 instead of AL8.

At the B and B Market, pork chops were 79 cents a pound, spare ribs were 69 cents a pound and two dozen cookies were $1.79.

Kirk's Sales and Service sold used cars, and there were a couple of deals. A 1961 Rambler classic was listed at $1,345, while a 1959 Studebaker Lark was going for $695.

A two-bedroom home with a full basement in the Butte was going for $13,500, while you could rent a two-bedroom unfurnished house in the same Butte neighborhood for $75 a month.

A story in the same edition detailed the purchase of Talkeetna Power and Fuel Company by Matanuska Electric Association. The purchase price was $115,000. Myron Stevens owned Talkeetna Power and Fuel Company.
