Recount figures

certify Hammond

Gov. Jay Hammond was formally certified last night as the winner of a recount of ballots from his Aug. 22 Republican primary duel with former Gov. Walter J. Hickel.

Lt. Gov. Lowell Thomas Jr. certified Hammond after double checking unofficial tabulations from the recount and re-examining challenged primary ballots which had been rejected by district or state canvass boards. Hammond finished with a 98-vote edge over Hickel, the same amount as before the recount.

Tax opposition foreseen

The Wasilla City Council hearing is expected to draw some opposing testimony to a sellers sales tax proposal.

Councilman Mike Carson introduced the ordinance, asking that such a tax, levied directly on businesses' receipts, rather than charged to the consumer at the cash register, is a good answer to the city's revenue problems.

WHS football wins second

The new Wasilla High School football team is past its first two games, still holding the opponents to no score. After a 6-0 win against East Anchorage the week before, the Warriors defeated the Dimond junior varsity 21-0 last Wednesday.

Game MVP honors went to Bob Menard and John Duenas on offense and defense, respectively.

Eero Volkswagen was touting is "Rabbit for the Snow." The Rabbit -- available in gas or diesel -- "puts the engine weight right over the drive wheels."

Teeland's Moonshine Shop was advertising "fine wines," none of which cost more than $3.39 a bottle.

The Valley Fair Mall had a full-page ad in the paper. Shops in the mall included D&A Super, Wasilla Realty, The Magic Barber Shop, Travel Services, Alaska Bake Shop, Coast to Coast and Windchime Bookstore.
