Knik residents up in arms over prison

Residents turned out in force Tuesday night at Settler's Bay Village Inn to question state Corrections Department Director Roger Endell about his plans to build a prison in their area.

Endell confirmed rumors that the site was now being considered for minimum-, medium- and/or maximum-security prisoners. He also told the audience his decision to build at Goose Bay was not final.

Council to investigate self

The Wasilla City Council on Monday appointed committee to investigate actions it took only days before.

The unusual move came after the lame-duck council acted at a special meeting Oct. 5 to fill a vacant position before swearing in three new members who were elected the previous day.

Headed by then-Mayor Harold Newcomb, the former seven-member council selected Jim Tapscott from a list of five applicants to fill the seat left vacant when Charles Bumpus was removed last month after being convicted of tax fraud.

New rental movies at Palmer-Wasilla Video Cache included Flashdance, Porky's and 48 Hours. Also at Palmer-Wasilla Video Cache, a "Movie Maker's Special" was listed at $1,869. It included a stereo tuner, a VCR and an autofocus camera.

In the classified section, you could find a 2,200 square foot house on two acres on Little Cottonwood Lake for $174,000.
