On this day in 1922, British archeologist Howard Carter and those who worked with him discovered a step leading to King Tutankhamen's tomb in Egypt's Valley of the Kings.

On this day in 1979, Iranian students stormed the U.S. embassy in Tehran and took 90 hostages. The students were protesting the United States' continued support of Iran's brutal shah who had earlier been deposed.
