On this day in 1913, the Lincoln Highway opened. The 3,300-mile road, which stretched from New York City to San Francisco, was the first paved coast-to-coast highway in the United States.

On this day in 1987, Pope John Paul II arrived in Miami, where he was welcomed by President and Mrs. Ronald Reagan.
