TODAY'S HISTORY

On this day in 1935, Dr. Robert Smith had his last drink and began his first day of sobriety, a day considered by many to be the day he and William G. Wilson founded Alcoholics Anonymous.

On this day in 1942, Nazi troops executed 173 male inhabitants of Lidice, Czechoslovakia. They also burned every house and deported the women and children to Germany for "re-education." Those whom they did not deport, they poisoned by exhaust gas in specially adapted vehicles.

On this day in 1943, the ballpoint pen was patented by Laszlo Biro and his brother Georg of Hungary.
