Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

• Air Force Airman Kyle S. Kobus graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. He is the son of Kristi Schneider of W. Granville St., Palmer and a 2008 graduate of Palmer High School.
• Skye Rench, son of Tom and Stacey Rench, Wasilla, received a Valley City State University V-500 scholarship for the 2011-12 academic year. He graduated from Colony High School in May of 2011.
• Tanya Lang of Palmer received her bachelor of science in elementary education from Misericordia University in Dallas, Penn., during its 2011 commencement ceremony.
• Wasilla High School graduate Ivy McDaniel of Wasilla received a five-year Knowles Science Teaching Foundation fellowship worth $150,000. She is a Scripps College graduate and is pursuing a career in high school math education. Her teaching experience includes working as a volunteer teaching at San Quentin State prison.
• Jacquelyn Johnson of Palmer, a first-year pharmacy and health professions student at Creighton University, Omaha, Neb., was named to the spring dean’s list for the 2010-11 academic year.
• Andrew Bryan Ford of Wasilla made the dean’s list Gardner-Webb University, Boiling Springs, N.C., for the Spring 2011 semester.
• Army National Guard Sgt. 1st Class Henry L. Kakaruk received a bachelor’s degree from DeVry University through the military’s extension program and was recognized for his accomplishment at a commencement ceremony conducted at Fort Richardson. Kakaruk, an information system manager, is the son of Linda Kakaruk and stepson of John A. Japp of Calder Road, Wasilla. His wife, Jimyung, is the daughter of Heyun Kim of W. Josselin Lane, Palmer. He is a 2007 graduate of Colony High School.
• Kiersten Wilber, a junior environmental sciences and biology major and a resident of Wasilla, was one of more than 50 students recognized at the Honors Program’s Award Convocation at Northern Arizona University April 30. She also was a recipient of the HON 191 Best of Class writing Award for Spring 2010.
• Jordan Elkins of Wasilla was named to the dean’s list at Quinnipiac University, Hamden, Conn., for the Spring 2011 semester.
• Rebekah Mathiesen of Talkeetna was named to the Culver-Stockton College dean’s list for the spring 2011 semester.
• David Aleksander Kellner-Rode of Wasilla earned a bachelor of science in environmental from Linfield College in McMinnville, Ore., May 29.
• Palmer’s Michael L Wagner, a freshman in engineering at Missouri University of Science and Technology in Rolla, Mo., was named to the honor list for the 2011 spring semester.
• Christy Hand, of Palmer, received a $1,000 Alaska Hotel and Lodging Association Scholarship. She plans to major in business management with an emphasis in hospitality management at the University of Alaska Fairbanks and intends to continue her involvement with the visitor industry by working at the Palmer Museum and Visitor Information Center in the summer.
