• Alaska Environmental Literacy Plan has selected stories about two Mat-Su Valley environmental education programs for inclusion in the plan. Honored were River Rangers Program, Wasilla, led by Mike Shea, and Burchell High School’s Field Study Program, Wasilla, led by Paul Morley.
• 2011 Palmer High graduate Collin Christiansen will play the role of Algernon Moncrieff in the Concordia University, Neb., production of Oscar Wilde’s “The Importance of Being Earnest: A Trivial Comedy for Serious People.” Christiansen plays football at Concordia and is the son of Palmer High head football coach Rod and Temple Christiansen.
• Slade Martin of Palmer was a delegate to the Alaska Youth Policy Summit in Juneau Feb. 13-15. The summit brought together youth ages 17 to 24 from across Alaska to advocate for young people in the state’s social services system.
• Burchell High School students Allie Harrington, Amber Mahoney and Jenny Nguyen qualified to compete in the “Brave New Voices” poetry competition April 28 in Anchorage. The winners there will represent Alaska at the National Competition in San Francisco.
• Burchell High and Houston High students competed in an archery event March 22 in Houston. And three male and three female Burchell students qualified for the state competition. They are first place winners Richard Hamlin and Kayla Jordan; second place winners Connor Floyd and Danielle Ponte; and third place winners Devin Duvall and Jessica Hofbauer.
