U.S. Army Sgt. Andrew J. (A.J.) Corbin was recently awarded the Joint Service Commendation Medal while stationed in Honduras.
Corbin, a Palmer native and 2011 graduate of Palmer High School, was instrumental in saving the lives of two Honduran military officials, according to an Army news release Assigned as a crew chief to the Air Ambulance Detachment at Coto Cano Air Base, Army officials said Corbin entered a hazardous area surrounded by jet fuel and broken electrical powerlines. Officials stated a fixed-wing aircraft had crashed within the base area of operation and Corbin’s detachment responded.
“Sgt. Corbin was essential in assisting medical and fire personnel in extracting and stabilizing patients for transport to the medical facility in preparation for medical evacuation,” an Army official stated. “His display of courage and heroism are keeping with the Army’s finest tradition and bring great credit upon himself…and the United States Army.”
Corbin’s citation read “For meritorious heroism as a responder to the crash of FAH-322 while assigned to Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 228th Aviation Regiment. Sgt. Corbin’s duty and commitment to mission accomplishment are in keeping with the finest traditions of military service. Sgt. Corbin’s actions reflect credit on him, the Winged Warriors Battalion, Joint Task Force Bravo, and the United States Army.”
Corbin is the son of Andrew Corbin of Palmer and Tina Haynes of Wasilla.
