Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Courtesy photoValley native Kristen Coan and Christopher Howard have announced their engagement, and have set a July 8 wedding date.
Kristen is the daughter of Vince and Paddy Coan. She is a 2008 Colony High School graduate and holds a bachelor’s degree in history from Washington State University and a master’s degree in history from the University of Arizona. She currently is a Ph.D. candidate in history at the University of Arizona.
Christopher, the son of Andy and Sharon Howard, is a graduate of North Attleboro High School in North Attleboro, Massachusetts. He holds a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Wheaton College, a master’s from Brandeis University and a Ph.D. from the University of Arizona. He is currently research assistant and professor of philosophy at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and will be a core faculty member in the UNC/Duke University program in politics, philosophy, and economics beginning in the fall.
The wedding will be at a private residence in Wasilla.
• Rebecca Steele-Mackey from Wasilla and Cassidy Evans from Palmer were named to the spring 2017 dean’s list at Central Methodist University in Fayette, Missouri. Steele-Mackey graduated this spring with a degree in mathematics. Evans is an athletic training major. Steele-Mackey also received recognition at the school’s annual All-Sport Awards Ceremony this spring. She lettered in women’s soccer for CMU, and was recognized as a Heart of America All-Conference athlete, and NAIA Scholar Athlete. Steele-Mackey also was honored for serving as a team captain throughout the season.
• Abigail Borge of Talkeetna and Clara Burnett of Wasilla were recently named to the spring 2017 dean’s list at Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado. Borge’s major is environmental studies, while Burnett’s major is exercise physiology. To qualify for the list, students took at least 15 credits of gradable hours and achieved a 3.60 or higher grade point average.
• Hannah Curry of Wasilla, a sophomore majoring in pre-nursing, was named to the spring 2017 dean’s list at the University of Sioux Falls in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. To qualify for the dean’s list, students must achieve a semester grade point average of 3.5 or greater on a 4.0 scale.
• Dawson Matthews of Talkeetna was named to the spring 2017 dean’s list at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington. Students must earn a 3.5 to 3.84 grade-point average to be listed.
• Jade Hermon of Palmer was named to the spring 2017 dean’s list at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. To be listed, students must have an academic record of 3.5 or above.
• Ryan Wharry of Palmer has been awarded the C. Vandestreek Scholarship for the 2017-2018 academic year by the Department of Communication Arts at Valley City State University in Valley City, North Dakota. Wharry is a freshman pursuing a major in art, and professional communication – journalism and media communication — with minors in art and business.
