PHS senior runs to second

ANCHORAGE — Grace Christian’s Jacob Kirk needed a late push to top Palmer senior Wylie Mangelsdorf during the boys’ five-kilometer race at the Lynx Invitational at Kincaid Park in Anchorage on Saturday.

Mangelsdorf, who finished seventh in the 4A state championships as a junior, led for more than half of the race. But it was Kirk, the defending 1-2-3A state champ, who used a time of 15 minutes and 52.6 seconds to win the race.

Mangelsdorf finished second with a time of 16:08.

Thanks to Mangelsdorf’s finish, Palmer finished third among 15 squads in the team standings.

Mason Minturn (15th, 17:24) and Jacob Whipple (18th, 17:33) also posted top-20 finishes for Palmer.

The Colony boys finished sixth in the event with 142 total points.

Schyler Knopp broke into the top-20 with a time of 17:39. Tanner Enloe was 23rd and Dylan Crawford finished 28th for CHS.

The Colony girls’ led by Alyssa Hutchins’ ninth-place finish, placed third in the team standings.

Sydney Stewart was 13th and Audrey Michaelson finished 20th for the Knights.

Palmer finished 13th in the girls standings.

Powered by three runners in the top-six, Service ran its way to the boys’ team title.

Despite not having a runner finish higher than eighth, South Anchorage won the girls title.

Skyview’s Ivy O’Guinn was the top runner in the girls’ race. Kenny Lake’s Kailey Wilson finished second.

Local prep cross country running teams will return to the Valley next weekend to participate in the Palmer Invitational on Saturday at Palmer High School.
