A pilot sustained serious injuries Friday morning when his single-engine plane crashed shortly after takeoff from an airstrip in Wasilla.

Palmer resident Jeffrey Tuttle, 34, was transported to Mat-Su Regional Hospital as responders on the scene quickly contained a fuel spill from the crash, which occurred around 11 a.m. near Caribou Street and Bogard Road.

According to an Alaska State Trooper online dispatch, the pilot as well as witnesses reported the plane suffered mechanical issues shortly after takeoff. The pilot was unable to return to the airstrip and crashed nearby.

A representative of the National Transportation Safety Board was reportedly on the scene by early afternoon Friday.
