Seims Theater Productions is putting on a local adaption of “The Pirates of Penzance” at the Glenn Massay Theater starting Friday, August 16.
This is the second time the Gilbert & Sullivan musical has been showcased at the Glenn Massay. Seims Theater Productions founder AJ Seims said that he's excited to have the opportunity to work on this classic comedic play again and present it to the community.
“It's nice to be able to join forces with the Glenn Massay," Seims said. “It works out pretty well. It's the best in town. It's a beautiful theater. There's a lot of cool things you can do there.”
Seims said that rehearsals have been going well and he feels good about all the people working on the play.
“We've got some exceptional talent," Seims said. "My goal is to have people see how wonderful we are.”
This play features over 60 people of all ages in the cast and crew which includes a live orchestra led by local music director Sara Guhl. Seims said that he has a great working relationship with Guhl and worked on various projects with her over the years.
“She finds some of the best talent of the Valley," Seims said. “It's always exciting to have an orchestra. It breathes a whole different life into it.”
“The Pirates of Penzance” is an operetta, which is essentially a satirical take on traditional operas.
The official Glenn Massay website offered the following description of the play: “This whimsical farce about a young ‘apprentice’ pirate, his band of tender-hearted compatriots, the renowned Major-General Stanley, and the daughters of the major-general, will keep your toe tapping and your mouth laughing.”
Seims said “The Pirates of Penzance” is a joyful production to be a part of.
"It's a lot fun," Seims said. "I like the slapstick of it.”
Seims’ cast and crew members donned pirate outfits and participated in the 2024 City of Wasilla Fourth of July Parade. “The Pirates of Penzance” float was named the best float this year.
"It was fun. I was surprised that we got first place," Seims said.
Seims said that he really enjoys being involved in community theater. He said it's a great way to make friends while working on a shared vision.
“I love to see something come to life. I love creativity and how things are made," Seims said.
In addition to the Glenn Massay performances, there will be promo shows of the “The Pirates of Penzance” held at the 2024 Alaska State Fair. Seims said that he appreciates how much the Fair does to highlight local talent.
“It's great. They do some good things there," Seims said.
“Pirates of Penzance” can be seen at the Glenn Massay Theater Aug. 16, Aug. 17, Aug. 22, Aug. 23, and Aug. 24. Admission is $26.
The Glenn Massay Theater is located within the Mat-Su College campus at 8295 East College Drive.
