PALMER — Eighth-grader Kasen Callison will represent Palmer Junior Middle School at the Alaska State Geography Bee in April after winning the school’s event earlier this month.
Callison beat out fellow eighth-grader Dayton Gatewood, who finished second, and last year’s school champ Trevor Kroening, a seventh-grader who finished third.
The contest is part of the National Geographic Bee, a contast that’s “designed to motivate students to learn about the world and how it works,” according to a press release. The national competition features a first prize of a $50,000 college scholarship. Participants come from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, U.S. territories and U.S. Department of Defense dependants stationed overseas.
