PALMER — Palmer Junior Middle School 8th grader Camille Folger is heading to the state spelling bee Friday, March 24.
Folger won the recent in-school spelling bee, giving her the opportunity to take her skills to the state level.
"It's interesting. I definitely didn't think I would win. I kinda just joined for fun," Folger said with a laugh. "It's a fun experience."
According to PJMS teacher Linda Jo Klapperich, all the winners from various schools across the state were required to take a follow-up test. She said the students with the top 50 test scores are able to participate in the state spelling bee this year.
Klapperich was chosen to serve as the announcer of this year's state spelling bee. She said that she's excited to take part in the event and be there in person to root for Folger.
"I feel honored," Klapperich said.
Folger said that she passed the follow-up test with no issues. She said that she is regularly practicing the list of words at home with the occasional pop quiz from her mother.
"Honestly I'm pretty confident," Folger said. "I'm not going to get too cocky, but I'm definitely gonna try. "I'm very prepared."
