Since taking office in 2010 as mayor of the city of Houston, I have worked closely with the City Council and city staff to bring positive, transparent change to the community we serve.
I have found that involving the citizens of Houston and other citizens and agencies of the Mat-Su Valley in our decision-making processes has been an effective tool in reaching this goal.
I’m very pleased with the formation of Houston’s new Comprehensive Community Economic Development Strategic Planning Committee. The ad hoc committee is responsible for gathering information directly from the community to determine what is wanted for residential, economic and recreational goals, public facilities and services, and environmental and transportation concerns. The information will be submitted to the City Council for incorporation into the city’s comprehensive plan.
The committee had its first planning meeting in May and has begun its community outreach efforts. The second meeting is at 6:30 p.m., June 6 at Houston City Hall.
Challenges, such as ways to effectively get information and announcements to all of Houston’s citizens about community gatherings and input sessions, are ones I’m confident this enthusiastic committee will creatively overcome. I’m excited to know the citizens of Houston now have a dedicated committee to ensure their input will influence the Comprehensive Plan for their city.
Having entered my second term as Houston’s mayor, I continue to actively work toward ensuring that the city of Houston is represented in all decisions that affect the city and its residents. I find it is extremely important to have open communication with the Mat-Su Borough and the cities of Wasilla and Palmer.
The infrastructure developments of the state and the Mat-Su Valley affect all residents in some way. By working closely with the borough and cities, we are able to come together for the common goal of responsible development in the Mat-Su Borough.
