To the editor:
More than 700 homeless youth were identified by MSBSD last spring. There is no way of knowing how many additional teens without shelters exist outside of the school system, but it is estimated that there are at least 300 to 400.
MY House and the Palmer Kiwanis are concerned with the health and safety of our Valley’s youth and will hold our second annual Potato Bowl competition to see who can collect the most supplies to help these teens through the winter. Come and enjoy the Sept. 28 football game between Palmer and Wasilla and help your town to fill the box that will be located at the entrance to Palmer’s field.
This year we are looking for food items with pull-tops, microwavable foods that can be warmed up in a gas station, granola bars, peanut butter, fruit cups, juice boxes, Chevron or gas cards bought at Carrs (to help teens get to school/work), food cards to Subway or places they can get a meal.
In addition, we are trying to set up a MY House account at Younique Boutique in the Meta Rose Square. If you or your teens have nice clothing you can donate to their consignment shop, please tell them you want them sold on the MY House account. This will allow female shoppers to come in and browse for clothing through the use of a voucher.
Thank you for showing your support for our Valley youth as we continue to meet their daily needs and work toward providing a shelter in the near future.
