WASILLA — A 31-year-old man was arrested after he fled when an off-duty police officer attempted to stop him for reckless driving Monday morning.
Alaska State Troopers responded after the off-duty officer called in a report of a possible drunk driver in a black 2003 Dodge Neon on Fairview Loop near Carl Drive at 9:22 a.m., Nov. 12, according to an AST dispatch statement.
The officer reported the driver nearly struck his vehicle three times before he contacted the driver of the Neon, identified himself as a police officer and ordered him to stop.
But the driver had other plans and sped off. They later found him at a home on Lynn Drive and identified him as Vasily Avetsiuk, 31.
“Avetsiuk refused to exit the residence and threatened to harm the trooper. A perimeter was set up on the residence and approximately two hours later Avetsiuk gave up,” according to the dispatch.
Avetsiuk was arrested for DUI, refusing a chemical test, assault on a police officer, eluding arrest, reckless driving and driving on an instructional permit. He was jailed at Mat-Su Pre-Trial Facility on $5,000 bail and will need to find someone to watch him before he can be released.
As of Thursday morning, Avetsiuk was still at Mat-Su Pre-Trial, according to jail records.
