FAIRBANKS — Colony scored 10 runs in the first inning, then held on for a 16-12 win in the opening game of the Alaska state tournament in Fairbanks.
Designated hitter Kody Ziter’s grand slam in the opening inning was the big highlight for the Northern Lights Conference champion Knights, which strung together four straight hits to start the game.
The win means Colony will face Juneau today at 4:30 p.m. with a berth in the state championship game on the line. Juneau beat Dimond 10-3 in Thursday’s opening game.
The Colony-West Valley game was delayed by over an hour while the teams waited for Sitka to pull out a 6-5 upset win over Chugiak. The Mustangs had not lost a game all season, but Sitka entered the tournament as the three-time defending state champions.
The final game of the tournament’s opening day, Soldotna vs. North Pole, didn’t get underway until after 9 p.m.
