Prep baseball: Warriors rally to beat Kodiak

KODIAK —Wasilla needed extra innings to beat Kodiak Saturday 7-4.

Tyler Boensch came up with a sacrifice fly for the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth inning for the Warriors, while Bryce Borngraeber pitched 5 2/3 innings, striking out seven. Boensch pitched 2 1/3 innings to record the win in relief.

“It was big, especially considering the fact that we haven't pulled through in these tight games before,” Wasilla senior captain Josh Grissom said by cellphone from Kodiak Saturday. “Finally figuring things out, putting it all together when we needed it is important coming into regions. First couple innings it was slow, but our bats started working and putting things together bit by bit.”

Chris Capo scored on the Boensch sacrifice fly. Ian Zwink, Jack Garnett and Blake Carricaburu followed with an RBI each.

The strong outing by Borngraeber didn’t go unnoticed by Wasilla head coach Jason Terryberry.

“He was hitting his spots. He was real good,” Terryberry said. “We've been pretty consistent all year. In those games that we lost, we could have easily won with a hit here or a play there. That's what turns that game from a loss to a victory. The kids have never given up, they've got a lot of heart.”

Wasilla will play its last game of the regular season against Houston on Monday.

Knights split games

KENAI — Jacob Butcher threw a complete game to help the Colony Knights beat Kenai 13-6 Saturday to bounce back after a Friday 8-7 loss in Kodiak.

Damon Hammer pitched the Kodiak game for the Knights and was relieved by Shawn Faulk and A.C. Schmer. The Knights were leading 6-2 in the fifth inning before an uncharacteristic spell of errors allowed Kodiak to tie and eventually win the game.

A day later, Butcher pitched all seven innings in the win over Kenai. Morgan McJimsey and Damon Hammer each recorded two hits.

“It took us a little while to get started, but once we got warmed up we hit the ball really well,” Hammer said by cellphone from Kenai.

The Kards led 4-0 going into the fifth inning, but Colony scored seven runs to take the lead.

Colony moves to 5-3 with the win. The Knights play a doubleheader against Palmer Monday, including the annual wood bat game.

Hawks fall in Kenai

Houston lost 10-0 to the Kenai Kardinals Friday.

Ethan Oliver pitched a five-inning complete game to lead the Kards to the win. Oliver was also 1 for 1 at the plate with two runs scored. A.J. Hull led the Kards with a 3 for 3 effort, including a home run, while scoring three runs and knocking in four RBI.
