PALMER - Neither Colony head coach Jeremy Johnson nor Palmer head coach Tom Harrison was exactly thrilled about their team's overall play in a 2-2 boys soccer tie at Colony High School on Monday. But both seemed to feel fortunate they left the field without a loss.
“I really thought they took it to us most of the match,” Johnson said. “I feel very lucky to get away with a tie.”
Seniors Devon Conroy and Peter Burton scored first-half goals for the Moose.
Conroy scored is 22nd goal of the season. It's a number that's not only tops in the Northern Lights Conference this season, but a new school record. Conroy moved past the old mark of 15, held by Johnson, last week. Johnson, a former PHS standout, set the record in 1992.
Junior Calvin Rich and senior Austin Manelick scored in the second half for Colony.
“I thought it was a tale of two halves,” Harrison said. “(In the first half) we put together some pretty nice soccer - good possessions. Sometimes I feel like when we're sitting on a lead we stop playing soccer, and start kicking the ball around wildly.”
Both Colony goals came off corner kicks. Rich cut the deficit to just one goal when he trickled a shot past Palmer goalkeeper Trent Berberich.
“The ball just popped out to Calvin, and some how it slipped through.” Johnson said.
Late in regulation, playing a ball off a corner kick, Manelick put a header into the net.
It was Rich's first goal of the season, and Manelick's sixth.
