The Soldotna Stars stunned Palmer with a 10-7 victory over the Moose Friday at Soldotna High School.
Mike Reed scored the go-ahead touchdown with 2 minutes and 9 seconds remaining in regulation to allow the small-school program to upset the 4A power.
Reed followed his 4-yard touchdown rush by running in the two-point conversion. Reed posted a game-high 154 yards on the ground, and accounted for most of Soldotna's 217 total yards.
Haakan Bohman gave the Moose the early lead with a 10-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. The senior running back gained 118 yards on 18 carries. Palmer rushed for 511 yards in a 40-20 win over West last week, but was held to only 125 yards on the
ground.
Both teams combined for 12 fumbles and zero passing yards.
After traveling south this week, the Moose now prepare to head north next week. Palmer opens the Railbelt portion of its schedule in the Interior against Lathrop.
Around the Railbelt
Juneau-Douglas has started the 2006 season, exactly the way it started the 2005 season - hammering all of its opponents.
On Friday, the defending 4A state champion Crimson Bears handed Lathrop a 69-6 beating.
The thee Valley squads in the Railbelt - Palmer, Colony and Wasilla - will have the pleasure of facing the Bears during a three-week stretch in September. Palmer has the chance to avenge a loss in 2005 title game as the Moose host Juneau Sept. 1. Wasilla travels to capitol city to face JDHS on Sept. 8, and Colony welcomes Juneau back to the Valley on Sept 15.
Juneau is 2-0 and has already outscored its opponents
