Prep hockey: State champs need overtime to edge Palmer

PALMER — The three-time defending 4A state champion South Anchorage Wolverines needed a pair of late goals to edge Palmer 3-2 in overtime at the Palmer Ice Arena on Tuesday.

Palmer’s Kyle Blakeman scored late in the third period to give the Moose the 2-1 lead, but South’s Taylor Wells posted the game-tying score with 3:55 left in regulation.

Kyle Simmons scored the game-winner in overtime.

South took the lead in the first period with a Zack Rall goal and Zach Richards tied the score for the Moose early in the second.

Palmer goalie Jonas Naegele stopped 36 shots in the loss.

Warriors power past Kards

WASILLA — Sophomore Trent Wohlers posted the natural hat trick during a four-minute stretch in the first period and led the Wasilla Warriors to a 4-1 win over the Kenai Central Kardinals at the Brett Memorial Ice Arena last week.

Each of Wohlers’ first-period scores came on the power-play, and the Warriors were 4-of-6 with the man-advantage in the win.

Freshman Chancie Hanson also posted a power-play goal in the third period.

Chris Yaskus stopped 20 of the 21 Kardinal shots he faced to earn the win in the Wasilla goal.

Palmer blanks Homer

PALMER — Palmer scored five third-period goals en route to a 10-0 win over the Homer Mariners at the Palmer Ice Arena last week.

Six different players scored for the Moose, who outshot the Mariners 42-7 in the North Star Conference win.

Senior Michael Hanson led Palmer with the hat trick, and fellow senior Zach Richards chipped in a pair of goals. Sophomore Jared Hanson also scored twice.

Miles George, Brennan Harrison and Dalton Bunness added goals for PHS.

Junior Jonas Naegele notched the shutout for the Moose.

Ravens held scoreless

WASILLA — South-Bartlett scored three times in the first period and skated to a 5-0 win over the Mat-Su Ravens at the Brett Memorial Ice Arena on Wednesday.

Mat-Su goalie Danielle Schuetter recorded 29 saves in the loss.

Alexa Schurte and Erika Wynn each scored twice to lead South-Bartlett.
