Prep hockey: Warriors score 12 in win over Kenai Central

WASILLA — The Wasilla Warriors skated off the ice frustrated Thursday, after a 4-1 loss to Soldotna.

On Friday, the Warriors had the opportunity to take out their frustration on North Star Conference rival Kenai Central.

Wasilla exploded for 10 goals in the final two periods, and scored a 12-1 win over the Kardinals at the Brett Memorial Ice Arena on Friday.

“I was disappointed. They didn’t play like we were asking them. I think they were still on Christmas vacation,” Wasilla head coach Bill Sturdevant said of the loss to the Stars, the Warriors’ first action since before the holiday break. “But they came out tonight and turned it around.”

Wasilla was held to just a single third-period goal on 34 shots against the Stars and fell for the first time this season in NSC

play.

“It was bad. None of us performed,” Wasilla freshman Trent Wohlers said. “We weren’t ready. They came out strong and beat us.”

But while much went wrong for the Warriors on Thursday, much went right the following night.

Wohlers posted three goals and two assists, and was one of eight players to score against Kenai.

“We came out ready,” Wohlers said.

Wasilla scored twice within a 34-second span late in the first period to take the 2-0 lead.

Matthew Friese scored twice for the Warriors. Joe Barkley, Derek Ostrom, Dylan Troisi, Ben Barber, Levi Johnston, Harvey Finch and Adam Friese also scored for WHS.

“Twelve-to-one, you don’t like running up the score, but I thought we played well,” Sturdevant said. “We played 100 times better than we did last night. The play was better, the skating was better, the passing was more crisp.”

Wasilla outshot the Kardinals 47-7 in the win.
