Prep hockey: Warriors upset defending state champions

WASILLA — Chancie Hanson found one heck of a way to celebrate his 18th birthday.

The Wasilla senior captain scored an early power-play goal to help the Warriors upset the defending state champion South Anchorage Wolverines 3-2 at the Brett Memorial Ice Arena Tuesday night.

"Best birthday present ever," Hanson said after the win.

Hanson, and his younger brother Cooper, each tallied power-play goals during the first four minutes of regulation to give the Warriors the 2-0 lead.

Sophomore Andrew Cooley netted the game-winner in the second period, and freshman goalie Lauren Massie made 35 saves in his first career varsity start to help the Warriors hold on to the victory.

"It feels great, it's kind of hard to explain," Hanson said about the win over the defending champions, and a squad that beat Wasilla 7-0 during the state tournament quarterfinals last season.

In other action, Dimond edged Palmer 3-1. Dalton Buness scored for the Moose.
