Prep shooters hit range

WASILLA — The local Scholastic Clay Targets Program recently hosted its first high school skeet and trap shooting event in the history of the new prep program.

Students from four local high schools participated in the new club event, and the Wasilla Warriors and Houston Hawks came away with team wins last Saturday at Grouse Ridge Shotgun Shooting Club in Wasilla.

Jake Turtle led Wasilla to a win over Palmer in the 25-bird trip and 25-bird skeet games. Turtle placed first in the skeet and finished in a first-place tie with Wasilla’s Damien Kuzmin in the trap. Wasilla’s Jhoanna Hughes was second in the trap, and tied with Wasilla’s Dakota Gordon for second in the skeet.

Hughes finished first among the girls with a score of 32 and Palmer’s Katarina Borg was second with 27 points.

Wasilla won the match with an average score of 29.

Houston followed by edging the Colony Knights with an average score of 32.

Colony’s Chance White placed first in the trap and second in skeet. White also finished with a top overall score of 38.

Colony’s Isaiah Woodall and Nathan Barnett finished second and third respectively in the trap. Colony’s Ayla Arvin and Sam Johnson finished tied for third in the skeet.

Houston’s Hunter Smith won the skeet and finished second overall with a score of 35.

Nathan Barnett used a shoot-off to edge Arvin for third place overall.

The teams will hit the range again Saturday. Colony faces Palmer at 10 a.m., and Wasilla follows against Houston at 2 p.m.

Grouse Ridge is located on Tex-Al Drive, off Wasilla-Fishhook.
