Prep skiers hit the trails for the first time this season

FAIRBANKS — The local prep cross country ski teams hit the trails for the first time this season at the Flint Hills Resources Town Race Series in Fairbanks on Saturday.

Palmer’s Sean Stephens was the top Valley skier, posting a fourth-place finish in the boys’ high school race. Stephens finished with a time of 24 minutes and 14 seconds, just one second behind third-place Robert Hvoda of Lathrop.

Stephens was one of two Palmer skiers to finish in the top 10. Davis Dunlap was sixth at 24:29.

Stephens and Dunlap were among nine Valley skiers to finish in the top-20. Corbyn Jahn led Colony with a 13th-place finish and time of 26:15. Baruch Chamberlin was the first Wasilla Warrior to cross the finish line, placing 17th with a time of 28:07.

Palmer’s Wylie Mangelsdorf (14th, 26:49) and Ted Hoople (16th, 28:00), and Colony’s Jonathon Mastroyanis (15th, 27:44), Schyler Knopp (19th, 28:12) and Robert Wise (20th, 28:13) also finished in the top-20.

Palmer also placed a pair of athletes in the top-10 of the girls’ high school race. Palmer’s Kimberly Delfrate was the top Valley skier, finishing sixth with a time of 21:30. Amanda Delfrate was ninth at 22:31.

Abby Jahn (23:07) led Colony with an 11th-place finish in the girls’ race. Valerie Schleich (23:22) led Wasilla at 14th and Morgan Michels (24:06) was the top Susitna Valley skier at 19th place.

Colony’s Sydney Stewart (23:18, 12th) and Ellen VanGorder (24:04, 18th), and Palmer’s Laura Whitmore (23:44, 16th) also finished in the top-20.

More than 170 skiers participated in the high school races. The meet also featured races for adults, elementary and middle school athletes.
