Prep skiing: Moose third in Fairbanks

FAIRBANKS — Palmer’s boys and girls cross country teams skiied to third-place finshes at the season-opening Flint Hills Town Race at Birch Hill Recreation Area in Fairbanks Saturday.

Wasilla assistant coach Ed Strabel said area high school teams used the race as part of an extended training sesssion, with skiers working out for a couple hours prior to the actual race.

“The kids used it pretty much as a training camp,” Strabel said. “The races were secondary.

Palmer’s Kimberly Del Frate was the top Mat-Su finisher overall in a time of 17 minutes, 57 seconds, good enough for fourth place in the girls’ high school race.

More than 300 skiers participated in the race, which included age divisions ranging from kindergarten on up. Marius Korthauer won the men’s overall title in a time of 20 minutes, 37 seconds, while Julia Coulter was the women’s winner in 15:19. Both ski for the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

The Colony Knights placed fourth in both the boys’ and girls’ high school race, while the Wasilla Warriors were fifth in both.

Strabel said the weekend training session provided a great early-season workout for area skiers.

“The kids were kinda tired,” he said. “We had to pour them onto the bus.”

Colony’s Heidi Doner placed seventh in the girls’ race, which was contested over a 5.074-kilometer course. Katherine Parker was the top Warrior girl in 21st. West Valley’s Marisa Rorabaugh was the top high school girl in 16:45.9.

Colony’s Mason Wick paced all Mat-Su boys in the race with a time of 24 minutes, 42.1 seconds over the 7.919-kilometer course. Palmer’s Strickland Dunedin was one spot back of Wick in 14th, while Wasilla’s Baruch Chamberlain placed 22nd for the Warriors. Lathrop’s Reese Hanneman took the boys’ title in a time of 22:01.6.

Not to be outdone by their skiers, Mat-Su ski coaches also strapped on the boards Saturday.

“All the coaches went ahead and raced, too,” Strabel said.

Ed Strabel won the 60+ men’s age group in a time of 28 minutes, 17 seconds. His son, Colony coach Mark Strabel, was 10th in the men’s 20-29 age group, one spot ahead of Palmer coach Darin Markwardt. Another Palmer coach, John Bishop, was 13th in the same age group.

Sue Skvorc, who also coaches at Colony, finished 44th among the 105 adult women and high school girls in the race.
