ANCHORAGE — A pair of Colony High School juniors were named all-tournament following the ASAA/First National Bank Alaska State Soccer Championships at Anchorage Football Stadium on Saturday.
Junior Bridger Van Ness represented Colony on the boys’ side, after the Knights notched a sixth-place finish in the eight-team field. Junior
Van Ness scored the game-winner for Colony in sudden-death overtime of a 4-3 win over West Valley in the consolation semifinals.
Kara Larson earned a spot on the girls’ team, for the Knights, who finished sixth in the girls’ field. Larson scored Colony’s lone goal in a 2-1 loss to West Valley in the fourth-place game.
Fans saw a new state champion crowd in both the boys’ and girls’ brackets.
Juneau-Douglas upset three-time defending state champion South Anchorage in the boys’ final. The Bears blanked the Wolverines 2-0.
In the girls’ final Service edged South Anchorage 2-1.
Chugiak was the defending state champion.
Fans witnessed a tournament oddity on Saturday. Both the boys’ and girls’ third-place matches ended in a 1-1 tie.
Service and Dimond played to a 1-1 tie in the boys’ third-place match, while Juneau-Douglas and Chugiak ended the girls’ third-place tie with a 1-1 tie.
Prior to the tournament, ASAA officials opted not to allow overtimes in the third-place and fourth-place matches.
