PALMER — The Houston Hawks girls’ soccer squad kicked off its 2016 season with its biggest victory in recent memory and followed it with a series sweep in Kodiak.

Days after beating Valley rival Palmer 2-1 in its season opener, the Hawks flew to an 8-0 win over Kodiak Friday at Kodiak High School.

Megan Adair notched a hat trick to lead Houston. Aspen Ruth and Taylor Moore added two goals each. Cassie Kapuniai also scored for the Hawks. Corree Bean earned the shutout in the Houston net.

Houston netted the sweep of the Bears with a 4-0 win at Kodiak Saturday morning. Ruth scored twice. Adair and Moore added a goal each.

Tuesday, Houston scored a pair of unanswered goals to score a 2-1 win over Valley rival Palmer at Palmer High School.

Tianna Adair and Megan Adair each scored late in the first half for the Hawks. Bean earned the win in the Houston goal.

Kiley Fish converted a penalty kick during the 20th minute to give Palmer the initial 1-0 lead.

Houston boys fall in Kodiak

The Kodiak Bears scored a pair of boys' soccer home wins over Houston Friday and Saturday.

Michael Steed scored a goal in each loss, a 7-3 defeat on Friday and 6-1 loss on Saturday. Dakota Watson and Damien Jessup also scored on Friday. Zach Melin recorded assists on all four Houston goals.

Surge leads Knights to win over Ketchikan

Colony used a second-half surge to score a 4-1 girls’ soccer win over Ketchikan Saturday morning at Colony High School.

Peyton Johnstone, Gabby Wakaliuk and Kaylee Mahler put together a string of unanswered goals for the Knights to help Colony win its 2016 season opener. Two of those goals came off Wakaliuk corner kicks. Wakaliuk scored on her own corner kick to give the Knights the 3-1 lead. The freshman set up Mahler’s goal with another corner kick.

Rina Inagaki, a foreign exchange student from Japan, scored in her Knights debut to give Colony an early 1-0 lead. Inagaki found the back of the net during the sixth minute. Johnstone recorded an assist on the play.

Ketchikan scored early in the second half to tie the match at 1.

Goalkeepers Maddy Zmuda and Ashlynn Cornelison shared time in net for the Knights, each playing 40 minutes of the match.

Colony boys top Dimond

Cameron Shaw scored the go-ahead goal during the 73rd minute to lead Colony to a 3-2 nonconference victory over Dimond Thursday night at Colony High.

With the score locked at 2, Colony worked the ball up the field, with at least six players getting a touch. Alex Valdez set up the score, sending a through ball to Shaw, who netted the game-winner.

Ben Sande gave the Knights the early 2-0 lead, scoring in the 20th and 27th minutes. Dimond posted goals during the 61st and 71st minutes to tie the score at 2.

Chance Fannon earned the win in the Knights net.

Freshman leads Wasilla girls

Wasilla freshman Abby Crawford enjoyed a big high school debut Thursday night.

Crawford scored twice to help lead Wasilla to a 3-1 nonconference girls soccer win over Ketchikan at Wasilla High School.

Crawford collected both of her goals in the first half. Alia Donley added a second-half goal. Ally Hull chipped in a pair of assists. Olivia Matson, also making her Warrior soccer debut, earned her first win as Wasilla’s goalkeeper.

Warrior boys get first win under new coach

The Wasilla boys earned their first win in the Danny Kilanowski era, scoring a 1-0 nonconference victory over Ketchikan Thursday night at Wasilla High.

Kilanowski is in his first season as head coach, replacing longtime Warrior mentor Blake Livingston who resigned last season after 16 years with the program.

Wasilla improved to 1-2-0 with the victory.

Palmer boys blank Hawks

The Palmer Moose opened the season with a 7-0 win over Houston Tuesday at Palmer High.

Blake Cooper notched a hat trick to lead Palmer. Manveer Singh added a pair of goals, and Johnie Burton collected two goals and three assists. Brandon Banks notched the shutout in the Moose net.

Palmer suffered a 6-0 nonconference loss to Ketchikan Friday night.

Palmer girls fall to Ketchikan

The Palmer girls enjoyed a fast start, but Ketchikan used a big second half to beat the Moose 5-1 at Palmer High School Friday night.

Palmer’s Gunpreet Kaur scored in the first minute of the game to give the Moose the quick lead, but Ketchikan rebounded for five unanswered goals. Ketchikan scored once in the first half to tie the game at 1, and added four second-half goals.
