Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

ANCHORAGE - Devon Conroy's goal in the 20th minute was all of the offense the Palmer High School boys soccer squad would need on Tuesday.
Conroy's score was the difference in a 1-0 win over the Wasilla Warriors at the Anchorage Football Stadium.
As a junior Conroy led his squad with 14 goals last season, using his speed to create many of his scoring chances. But Palmer head coach Tom Harrison called Conroy's first tally of his senior season, “uncharacteristic.”
Conroy, playing wide out to the side, drove the ball deep into the Warriors' defensive zone, and tried to send a pass across the turf to Moose midfielder Ben Beetch. The pass didn't exactly make it to Beetch, the intended target. Instead, Conroy sent the ball into the back of the Wasilla net.
Overall Harrison was pretty happy with the first outing of the year.
“We certainly have a lot of things to work out, but it was a decent first outing,” Harrison said. “We did a lot of things right.”
Harrison noted the play of the Berberich brothers, Jared and Trent. Both seniors, the Palmer twins will play a large role in Palmer's success, Harrison said, especially on the defensive end of the field. Jared is the team's sweeper this year, while Trent is the starting goalkeeper.
Palmer was originally to host the Northern Lights Conference matchup on Machetanz Field, but conditions were still too sloppy to field the game. Despite losing Palmer's first home game of the season, Harrison saw it as a good opportunity.
AFS is the site of the state tournament, and Valley schools normally do not have the opportunity to see much time on the fast artificial surface until the end of the year. Coincidentally, Palmer will have back-to-back games on the turf. Palmer faces Grace Christian at AFS on Tuesday.
Wasilla is at Colony tonight at 6 p.m.
