Prep soccer: Moose on roll

Since recording its first loss of the season last week, the Palmer boys soccer squad has notched three-straight wins.

But more remarkable than the streak, is the margin of victory. The Moose have outscored their opponents 20-0 during that stretch, posting a 9-0 route of Homer, 5-0 victory over Skyview and 6-0 win over Nikiski.

Many of those goals have come off of the right leg of senior Devon Conroy. With 10 goals in the last three games, Conroy shattered Palmer's single-season scoring record. Conroy's 21 goals is now well past the old mark of 15, that had been held by Jeremy Johnson, a former Moose standout who is now the head coach of the Colony Knights.

Conroy scored four times in the win over Homer. Jerry Melin also scored twice against the Mariners. Spencer Galvin, Ben Beetch and Andy Gardner also chipped in goals.

Conroy scored three times in the win over Skyview. Beetch and Tyler Chapman also scored for Palmer.

Conroy grabbed another hat trick in the win over Nikiski. Beetch, Galvin and Peter Burton also joined him on the scoresheet.

Palmer faced Colony in its regular season finale on Monday. Results were not available prior to press time.

Palmer girls

still unbeaten

Kristen McNiven and Jessica Wyckoff each scored twice to lead the Palmer girls soccer squad to a 10-0 win over Nikiski on Saturday.

McNiven has now scored in the last three games for Palmer, and four of the last five. The senior helped Palmer (6-0-3) stay undefeated with a goal in a 4-1 win over Homer on Thursday, and a score in a 3-1 victory over Skyview on Friday.

Wyckoff has also scored in four of the last five games.

Houston boys forfeit

The Houston boys soccer squad was forced to take a forfeit in the beginning of the second half of a game against Nikiski.

The shorthanded Hawks needed to use a pair of varsity starters to field a complete team for their junior varsity game, according to HHS head coach Chad Rice.

After playing three halves of soccer, those starters began play in the second half of the varsity game, but the Nikiski coaching staff complained, citing an Alaska Schools Activities Association rule.

Rice said he found out after the game that the rule that allegedly limits players to just three halves of action per day in soccer does not exist.
