Prep soccer round-up: Knights sweep Juneau; Warriors sweep Grace; Moose swept

PALMER — Peyton Johnstone scored twice to lead the Colony Knights to a 2-1 girls soccer win over Juneau-Douglas Thursday evening at Colony High School.

Bristyl Baker also scored in the win, and Maddy Zmuda recorded the victory in the Knights net.

In boys action, Ben Sande and Cameron Shaw each scored during Colony’s 2-0 victory over Juneau-Douglas. In a match that featured the two winningest coaches in Alaska prep soccer history, Juneau’s Gary Lenhart and Colony’s Jeremy Johnson, Sande gave the Knights an early edge with a goal during the 20th minute. Landen Basner sent a pass down the line for Sande to run on to. Sande, from about 18 yards out, used his right foot to tuck a shot inside the near post.

Shaw scored in the 42nd minute off a corner kick from Alex Valdez. The ball deflected off a defender and Shaw rocketed a volley from the right side, low into the far-side corner.

Zach Zmuda made five saves to earn the shutout in the Knights net.

Tuesday, Sande notched a hat trick to lead Colony to a 5-2 win over the West Anchorage Eagles at Colony High School.

Sande scored twice in the first half to help Colony build a 3-0 lead going into the break. Shaw contributed the other goal, plus two assists for the Knights in the win. Valdez finished with two assists, and Brett Hintz also had an assist.

The Knights return to Northern Lights Conference play to host Nikiski on Friday and Homer Saturday.

Warriors sweep Grace

WASILLA — The Wasilla girls rallied to score a 3-1 NLC victory over visiting Grace Christian Thursday at Wasilla High School.

Ally Hull scored a pair of goals during the win. Hull posted the game-winner, knocking in a header off a corner kick during the 37th minute. Alexa Starr added a goal and two assists in the win.

Later Thursday evening, Carson Dodd scored twice to lead Wasilla to a 2-0 boys win over Grace.

Earlier this week, Wasilla blanked Houston 10-0. Starr scored four times. Teyonnah Williams netted the hat trick. Hull and Alia Donley added a goal each.

Grizzlies, Wolves blank Moose

PALMER — After an hour of empty nets, Grace put the pressure on and ended the girls’ game 4-0 Monday.

The Grizzlies wore down the Moose defensively and found successful combinations for the win and the end of the 0-0 tie that lasted the majority of the game.

The Palmer boys’ team lost 5-0. Grace Christian scored most of their points in the first half.

In Eagle River Wednesday, the Palmer boys’ and girls’ teams admitted defeat yet again versus the Wolves.

Eagle River blanked Palmer 2-0 in the boys’ action.
