Prep soccer: Warriors and Moose collide at Machetanz Field

PALMER — The Wasilla Warrior girls played a controlled game against the Palmer Moose Thursday, scoring six unanswered goals in a 6-0 shutout over the Moose at Palmer High’s Machetanz Field.

Wasilla followed its game plan, “winning control of the ball and putting it up to our speedy forwards,” Wasilla head coach Patrick O’Neill said. “We work hard on a counter attack, and strike quick.”

Junior Alexa Starr helped lead the Warriors to victory scoring four goals; two expertly booted just above the fingertips of Palmer goalkeeper Kat Godden, who despite the score, played well and collected numerous saves.

Starr showed both poise and skill, dribbling through Palmer defense, setting up quick passes, and constantly assessing the field. Ally Hull drilled in one goal off a deflection and a second from a corner kick.

Wasilla, which hosts Lathrop today at 5:30 p.m. at WHS, is set to play seven games in the next 10 days. Palmer hosts Lathrop Saturday at 10 a.m. at PHS. Both are nonconference matches.

Wasilla boys 4, Palmer 0

WASILLA — For most of the first half the Palmer Moose and Wasilla Warriors played an even game. Both teams fought back and forth moving the ball downfield and taking strikes on goal.

But Wasilla was able to strike four times and earn the 4-0 Northern Lights Conference shutout of the Moose at Palmer High.

“We worked our combination play and had better possession,” Wasilla head coach Blake Livingston said after the game.

Wasilla’s first score came when Ethan Keenan set up a play to Grig Lozko, who poked the ball in for goal. Shortly before halftime, Kyle Broach sent a slicer right in front of the goal that Keenan slid in for a score.

Wasilla returned at half more settled and in control. The Warriors racked up two more goals in the second half. Alex Fonov dribbled his way up field and shot on goal unassisted. Later Keenan delivered a kick to Fonov, who quickly shot it past a Palmer defender and Palmer goalie.

Wasilla returns to its home field to host Lathrop today at 7:30 p.m. Palmer hosts Lathrop Saturday at 11:45 a.m. at PHS.
