WASILLA - The Palmer Moose boys soccer team saw a handful of streaks come to an end Monday, with a 2-0 loss to the Wasilla Warriors at Wasilla High School.
The Moose had won their first five games of the season, scoring 21 goals during that stretch. Senior Devon Conroy tallied goals in all five of those games, including multi-goal efforts in the last four. And even more impressive than that, the Moose had yet to allow a goal.
“We knew Palmer had a really solid team,” Wasilla head coach Blake Livingston said. “(We knew) it definitely would be a big challenge for us.”
The Warriors (6-1-1) responded to the challenge with a pair of first-half goals.
Junior forward Jordan Ingalls put a penalty kick past Palmer keeper Trent Berberich at the 20th minute. Six minutes later Jimmy Sliwa knocked in a David Kellner-Rode throw in with his head to give WHS the two-goal advantage.
“We kind of set a president in the first half,” Livingston said. “We created a lot, and had some good opportunities.”
While the Wasilla offense supplied the momentum in the first 25 minutes of play, Livingston said the focus during the final 25 minutes was all defense.
“They sent everyone forward,” Livingston said.
It was the second time the Valley rivals met this season. In the season opener at Anchorage Football Stadium, Palmer edged Wasilla 1-0.
With the Northern Lights Conference championship tournament now a week away, the next four days will undoubtedly determine who floats to the top of the NLC's North Division. With the win, Wasilla is now 6-1-1. Wins over Houston and Grace Christian improved Colony's record to 6-0-1. Palmer is now 5-0-1.
Wasilla and Colony meet for the second time on Saturday at noon. The teams played to a scoreless tie early in the season.
Palmer caps the regular season with a contest against Colony, Monday at 4 p.m.
Girls play to tie
The Palmer girls soccer squad remains without a loss after a 1-1 tie against Wasilla on Monday.
With the Moose trailing late in the game, Palmer senior Katy Aplin scored in 60th minute to tie the contest. After a Palmer corner kick, Aplin picked up a loose ball, and put it into the Wasilla net.
The Warriors took a 1-0 lead with junior Csesalie Lease's fifth goal of the season in the 25th minute.
The tie snapped the Warriors' three-game losing streak. Wasilla is now 3-3-2.
