WASILLA - Wasilla senior Anne Wesser struck out 15 Colony hitters in seven innings of work to lead the Warriors to a 4-1 victory over the Knights Tuesday at the Bumpus Softball Complex in Wasilla.
Wasilla got three runs in the first inning on just one hit against Colony starter Michelle Stratton. The Warriors were helped out by two Colony errors in the inning.
Staked to the early lead, Wesser cruised through the Colony lineup. She allowed just five baserunners, and gave up only three hits - two of them to Colony shortstop Desi Diselrod.
“When you have Anne on the mound, three runs is huge,” Wasilla coach Sue Allen said following the game.
The win moved Wasilla to 4-2 in conference play and put the Warriors in position to earn one of the four Railbelt Conference berths in the state tournament with a strong showing this weekend in Fairbanks.
“We could lock it up this weekend,” Allen said of the upcoming road trip, which will pit Valley teams against Lathrop, North Pole and West Valley.
The Warriors went 2-1 against the Fairbanks-area schools earlier this season. Wasilla is currently second in the conference, and is the only team in the state to defeat conference-leading Juneau-Douglas.
The loss ended a three-game winning streak by the Knights.
CHS grabs wins over Seward, Palmer
The Knights pushed their winning streak to three games with a 15-1, three-inning defeat of Palmer Tuesday.
Colony starter Reanna Stewart struck out four batters and gave up only two hits to pick up the win. The game was called early on account of the mercy rule. The Knights broke things open in the bottom of the third inning, scoring 10 runs in the frame.
Colony leadoff hitter Ashley Placzek scored four times for the Knights.
The victory capped a three-game series that saw the Knights outscore their opponents 59-21. On Monday, Colony took a doubleheader from the Seward Seahawks in Seward by scores of 20-6 and 24-14.
Pitchers Dani Buckley and Michelle Stratton each picked up wins against the Seahawks.
