Prep swim: Wasilla boys second at Homer Invitational

HOMER — The Wasilla Warriors finished second in the boys’ team standings at the Homer Invitational swimming and diving meet at Homer High School on Saturday.

The Warriors posted 64 points, trailing only Kodiak’s first-place total of 88.

Wasilla’s 200-yard medley relay team — senior Tommy Hightower, junior Christian Long, junior Max Merriam and junior Charles Frey — powered the team with a first-place finish. The relay team finished in 1 minute and 47.8 seconds in the event, nearly two seconds ahead of Soldotna.

In the induvidual races, Hightower finished second in the 200 freestyle, Long was third in the 200 induvidual medley and Frey was fourth in the 100 freestyle.

Wasilla junior David Kennedy was the top diver of the competition, winning the 1-meter event with 195.50 total points. Kennedy scored 10 more points than second-place Tim Schachle of Colony.

Jeffrey Frey helped lead Colony to a fifth-place finish in the boys’ standings with a second-place finish in the 200 induvidual medley. CHS teammate Rhowe Stefanski also notched a second-place finish in the 50 freestyle.

Kyle Johnson led seventh-place Palmer with a third-place finish in the 100 breaststroke.

On the girls’ side, sophomore Katelyn Payne led Colony to a fourth-place finish, with a pair of second-place finishes. She was the runner-up in both the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke.

Junior Caity Stigen helped the Warriors finish fifth. She was third in the 500 freestyle and fifth in the 50 freestyle.

Rachel Kennedy finished second in the girls’ diving for the Warriors.

Junior Madelyn Peterson led Palmer with a sixth-place finish in the diving.
