Prep swimming: Valley squads open season at Lathrop Invite

FAIRBANKS - Teams from Colony, Palmer and Wasilla competed in the first swimming and diving meet of the season - the Lathrop Invitational - in Fairbanks on Friday and Saturday.

Wasilla posted a third-place finish in the boys' standings with 54 total points, and finished seventh among eight teams on the girls' side.

Christian Long led the Warriors with a pair of first-place finishes. Long won the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2 minutes and 10 seconds. He also won the 100 backstroke with a mark of 59.40 seconds, slightly better than Colony's Jeffrey Frey, who finished at 59.77.

With a pair of second-place finishes, Frey led the Knights to a fifth-place finish in the boys' standings.

Tim Schachle won the 1-meter diving competition for the Knights. With 208.15 total points, Schachle finished ahead of Wasilla's David Kennedy (198.9) and fellow Knight Brian Cox (153.65).

Rhowe Stefanski also won an event for CHS, finishing first in the 100 freestyle.

The Colony girls also finished fifth in the event, with 27 total points. Katelyn Payne led the Knights with a fourth-place finish in the 200 individual medley.

Palmer finished seventh in the boys standings, led by Kyle Johnson's third-place finish in the 50 freestyle.
